I don’t know how long I’ve been standing here staring at the jeweled necklace—long enough for the water from the hot tub to dry on my naked body, leaving me tingling. Long enough for me to figure out that yes, those are real diamonds. Long enough for it to startle me when I hear Lane Kenyon’s voice…

“Do you like it?” the billionaire Brit asks from the doorway of his bedroom, where I stand staring at a diamond collar, engraved with my name. Trying to get my wits about me, trying to pretend that I don’t feel his eyes burning a trail down my body, I turn and find him looming in a white spa towel wrapped around his waist. Toned shoulders, bare chest, six-pack abs…he looks like an advertisement for some expensive cologne, and I think he knows it.

But a little bit of authenticity creeps into his accented voice. “If you don’t care for it, I can get another one more to your liking.”

“It’s beautiful,” I confess, because it’s an astonishing piece of jewelry. The kind of thing I only ever dreamed of wearing when I was just Jessie Lou from the trailer park. Which makes his suggestion of simply replacing it with something else seem quite nearly vulgar.

My husband is a wealthy man; he’s made investments that will assure our comfort for the rest of our lives. But a necklace like this…I would never even think to ask Dan for anything like it; I’d feel selfish for doing so. But Dan’s boss can buy and sell us both thousands of times over.

“Ballsy move,” I say with as much bravado as I can muster.

“How so?”

“This took planning…” I begin.

“Yes. I am a man who plans.”

I clear my throat. “But you had no idea that I’d say yes to our threesome action earlier tonight. You couldn’t be sure my husband would agree to let me spend the weekend with you, either. So what were you going to do with this necklace if it didn’t pan out? I suppose you could just detach the gold disk engraved with my name and give it to some other woman—”

“It’s a gift for you,” Lane interrupts. “No one else.”

He can’t be serious. “A gift?”

“Yes. I’d like you to wear it this weekend. You may keep it, afterwards, as a token of my esteem.”

I have the strangest sensation that he’s trying to court me. “How much esteem can that be?” I ask, wondering why I have to be so difficult. Why is it always been so hard for me to trust anything, or anyone, but Dan? “You scarcely know me.”

“A woman who agrees to an adventure such as the one we’re having now—I knew she’d be a woman that I could admire. So I bought you this necklace.”

So he is serious. My head spins more than a little as I try to understand his game. If he’s just after sex, he’s gone to a lot of trouble to get it. “You’re selling past the close, Mr.
